Han Zhi stood in the doorway, face expressionless, but anyone who knew him could tell he was furious.
The room felt several degrees colder.
My legs went weak. I hid the three bank cards behind my back.
I tried to act calm, about to greet him, but Mrs. Han beat me to it:
“Han Zhi, this woman’s only with you for money. She just took twenty million from me to break up with you”
Seriously?
I mean, yes, I was after the money, but did she have to sell me out like that?
Han Zhi said nothing, just stared at me like a wolf eyeing its prey.
I shrank back a step, but then remembered what he’d said behind my back and the fact his own mother had just betrayed me.
Suddenly, I found my backbone.
“What are you looking at? You think you’re so righteous?
“I know all about what you said behind my back!
“Yeah, I’m with you for the money. But is that all on me?
“If you didn’t like me, you could’ve just said no.
“You knew all along why I was here, but you agreed anyway just to watch me make a fool of myself. You wanted to get something for nothing.
“You’re worse than I am”
I got it all out in one breath. I felt a little better, but also strangely sad.
Mrs. Han snapped, “Enough”
Han Zhi still said nothing, arms crossed at the door.
I turned to Mrs. Han, “And you! Don’t think you can do whatever you want just because you’re older.
“You think bribing your son’s girlfriend behind his back is honorable? And then you turn around and stab me in the back? Pathetic!”
Mrs. Han was so mad she nearly hit me, but Jiang Xueying stopped her.
“Madam, please, calm down!”
Mrs. Han shook her off, yelling, “How am I supposed to calm down?!”
Then she turned on Han Zhi, “Look at this! This is the girl you’ve been hung up on for five years! This is how she talks to her elders?”
She froze.
I blinked. “Five years?”
Mrs. Han didn’t answer, but Han Zhi suddenly laughed.
I’d rarely seen him laugh usually it was a cold or mocking chuckle, never real amusement.
Even now, there was no joy in it. If anything, it made me feel worse.
“Han Zhi!” I called, unable to help myself.
He stopped laughing. “Sorry. I lost control,” he said quietly.
I looked at him, then followed his gaze to Mrs. Han, whose face was thunderous.
He didn’t explain the “five years” thing, just asked me, “What do you need all that money for?”
With everything so chaotic, I answered honestly, “I want to buy a house.”
Han Zhi looked like he wanted to say something, but just clenched his jaw, took a deep breath, and strangely his eyes turned red.
“What’s wrong?” I asked.
Before he could answer, Mrs. Han exploded again:
“Wanting to buy a house is normal. Why are you so moved? Haven’t the Han family given you enough?
“You’re this touched by a simple promise? What about us?”
Han Zhi laughed again, “What about you?”
Mrs. Han glared at him.
Han Zhi raised an eyebrow, “So what are you going to do about it?”
I shivered.
What the hell was going on here?
Mrs. Han really had no control over Han Zhi. Furious, she grabbed a glass and smashed it against the TV, then stormed out with Jiang Xueying.
After they left, Han Zhi shot me a look cold, but with a hint of vulnerability in his red-rimmed eyes.
Feeling guilty, I looked away and shrank back.
“Come here.”
After a long silence, Han Zhi spoke again.
I hesitated, then shuffled over.
He reached out his hand.
I wanted to play dumb, but when I looked up and saw his still-reddened eyes, I gave in and handed over the sweaty bank cards.
Han Zhi snapped them in half, one by one, then glared at me.
“Next time, it’ll be your legs I break.”
With that, he turned and went to the bedroom.
Next time, it’ll be your legs...
I mouthed silently at his back.
Bang....
The bedroom door slammed shut.
I sighed and started cleaning up the mess.
Of course there’s no such thing as a free lunch. I’d really been played this time.
But why? I hadn’t done anything truly evil.
And what was with Han Zhi and his mom? And what about me and Han Zhi? We’d only known each other for a bit over six months.
So what was that about five years?
If Han Zhi had really been hung up on me for five years, what about his first love?
All these questions tangled together in my mind, impossible to unravel.
Hiss....
I wasn’t paying attention and cut my finger on the broken glass.
Just my luck.
I sighed, about to go find the first aid kit, when the bedroom door opened again.
Han Zhi stood there, staring at my bleeding finger, and let out a heavy sigh.
